What the calculation includes
Length times width gives surface area. Multiplying by thickness converted from inches to feet gives cubic feet; dividing by 27 gives cubic yards. An optional allowance shows how a chosen percentage changes that simple volume.
What it does not include
Thickened edges, footings, steps, slopes, voids and irregular shapes are not included. The tool does not tell you the thickness, reinforcement, mix or foundation design your project needs. Have the installer measure and the appropriate designer specify the actual work.
Use the result to ask better questions
Bring the dimensions and intended use to the provider rather than ordering concrete from the result. Ask which parts of the proposal explain differences from the rectangular estimate. Final quantities depend on the approved design and measured site.
A worked geometry example
A hypothetical rectangle 20 feet long and 10 feet wide has an area of 200 square feet. If a project design specifies 4 inches of thickness, the rectangular volume is200×(4÷12)÷27, or about 2.47 cubic yards. Selecting 10 percent allowance displays about 2.72 cubic yards. These numbers demonstrate the arithmetic only. They do not recommend those dimensions, that thickness or an allowance for your property.
Break an irregular outline into clear parts
Sketch separate non-overlapping rectangles and calculate each one before adding their preliminary volumes. Keep steps, footings and thickened edges outside this simple tool: they need additional measured geometry. Do not count the overlap twice. If the surface slopes or thickness varies, the single-thickness result is only a simplified comparison, so ask the designer or installer how the actual quantity is established.
Use the output as a question, not an order
Bring the dimensions and calculation to the site discussion. If the proposed quantity differs, ask which features, measurements or design details explain it. A sound answer can refer to parts that the rectangle leaves out. Do not reduce a professional quantity to the tool result without understanding those differences. Final concrete ordering, mix selection and placement planning belong with the parties responsible for the approved work.
How the volume is calculated
Area
Length × width, in square feet
Volume
Area × (thickness ÷ 12) ÷ 27, in cubic yards
Allowance
Base volume × (1 + chosen percentage ÷ 100)
